Retaining walls that actually hold
Most retaining wall failures in Nebraska happen because they weren't sized for the height of the slope or the pressure of wet clay soil. When water builds up behind a wall without proper drainage, the weight eventually pushes the blocks forward or causes the base to settle unevenly.
Divine builds every wall to engineering spec. We use sized clear-cover limestone backfill and perforated pipe systems to route water away from the structure. By burying the first course of block on a compacted gravel base, we ensure the wall stays level through decades of freeze-thaw cycles.
Wall types we install
Segmental block walls
Natural stone walls
Using limestone or fieldstone provides a timeless look. Each stone is hand-selected and placed to create a sturdy, gravity-based structure that blends perfectly into heavily wooded or traditional landscapes.
Interlocking concrete blocks are the most reliable choice for structural integrity. These systems allow for curves and integrated steps while providing a clean, professional finish that complements modern Omaha architecture.
Boulder walls
Timber walls (repair only)
Large granite boulders offer extreme durability for significant grade changes. These walls provide a rugged, maintenance-free solution that handles heavy water runoff without shifting or eroding over time.
While we suggest block or stone for new builds, we offer specialized repairs for existing timber walls. We can replace rotting headers, install new deadmen anchors, and improve drainage to extend the life of your wood structure.
Our retaining wall process
1. Site walk and grade assessment
We measure the height and length of the slope to determine the necessary surcharge load calculations. We check for utility easements and drainage patterns that will impact the wall's design.
2. Design and quote
You receive a clear breakdown of block type, square footage, and necessary backfill material. We provide a firm quote based on the specific engineering needs of your local soil.
3. Permits and utility locate
Divine handles the logistics. We call for utility locates to map underground lines and pull any necessary building permits required by the city of Omaha or Douglas County.
4. Excavation and base
We clear the site and dig a structural trench. A level base of compacted road stone is installed to create a footing that won't shift when the ground freezes and thaws.
5. Block courses and backfill
As we stack each layer, we install drainage pipe and fill the core and back behind the wall with clean rock. This prevents future hydrostatic pressure from pushing the wall out.
6. Cap course and finish
The final course is glued with high-strength masonry adhesive. We backfill the top with topsoil or decorative rock and restore any disturbed turf, leaving the site clean and functional.

Why work with Divine on retaining walls
Divine Landscape & Design is veteran-owned and operated. We take a disciplined, mission-first approach to hardscaping, ensuring every project is executed with precision and high-level communication. You will never have to wonder when our crew is showing up or what the next step is.
We do not guess on wall engineering. Every wall we build is sized for the specific soil weight and grade of your property. By using proper base depths and structural backfill, we build walls that stay straight and functional for decades, not just a few seasons.
Our reputation in Omaha and the surrounding metro is built on structural integrity. Read our reviews and you will see a common theme: we show up on time, we build it right the first time, and we leave your property cleaner than we found it.
Retaining wall questions
Do I need a permit for my retaining wall?
In Omaha and most surrounding municipalities, a permit is typically required for any wall over 4 feet in height. We handle the permit application process and ensure the design meets local building codes and engineering requirements.
How long does a typical installation take?
Most residential retaining walls are completed within 3 to 7 days. Larger, multi-tiered projects or sites with difficult access can take longer. We provide a specific timeline with every quote and stay on your job until it is finished.
Why do many retaining walls in Omaha fail?
Failure is almost always caused by water and poor base preparation. Hydrostatic pressure from wet clay soil pushes walls over if they lack proper drainage stone and perforated pipes. We use oversized clear-cover rock to ensure water moves away from the wall.
Can you repair an existing timber wall?
We offer repairs for timber walls that are still structurally sound but need localized help. However, for most rotted timber walls, we recommend a full replacement with segmental block or stone for a permanent solution.
